This training teaches how to analyze and fuzz test deeply embedded devices using custom embedded operating systems. These systems play a crucial role in the ever-growing Internet of Things and typically offer a lucrative attack surface with over-the-air interfaces, hardcoded secrets, and missing security protections.
In this training, we get to know state-of-the-art code obfuscation techniques and look at how these complicate reverse engineering. Afterwards, we gradually familiarize ourselves with different deobfuscation techniques and use them to break obfuscation schemes in hands-on sessions. Thereby, participants will deepen their knowledge of program analysis and learn when and how (not) to use different techniques.
This class will focus on WinDbg, the Windows Debugger, and how to use all its recently introduced capabilities with the aim of assisting in the research of Windows security internals, malware analysis, and general SRE. Students taking this class will gain valuable scripting and debugging skills using the new Debugger Data Model, NatVis, LINQ, and JavaScript capabilities. They will also be introduced to Time Travel Debugging, the Debug Engine and its COM and .NET interfaces, the usage of Debugger API extensions, and more. User mode applications, kernel-mode components, as well as crash dumps will be used throughout the course, and as WinDbg supports Objective-C, Swift, Mach-O and ELF binaries and symbols, skills learnt can be applicable to other platforms as well.
